Vietnam’s sour fish soup has entered the list of the world’s most delicious dishes.
Canh chua fish soup and “lẩu cá linh bông điên điển” (a type of fish hotpot) are famous fish-based dishes in Vietnam highly praised by international diners, according to Taste Atlas.
On July 15th, Taste Atlas released a list of the 57 best dishes made from fish worldwide, with Vietnam’s canh chua cá ranking 8th. Sweet and sour fish soup ranked 19th, and “lẩu cá linh điên điển” ranked 53rd.
Canh chua cá is a signature Vietnamese dish known for its sour, spicy, and sweet flavors. It typically combines ingredients such as tamarind, pineapple, tomatoes, bean sprouts, and various herbs with smooth-skinned fish like snakehead or salmon. Canh chua cá is often seasoned with cilantro, sawtooth herb, and eaten with rice. The dish received a rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars.
Canh chua ngọt is another version of canh chua cá, rated 3.8 out of 5 stars by international diners. It is introduced as a “popular soup of the Vietnamese people” in the Mekong Delta region. The dish features a sweet, sour, and savory taste profile. Ingredients typically include snakehead fish, catfish, basa fish, eel, or shrimp, along with tomatoes, okra, pineapple, tamarind, bean sprouts, and various herbs, served with rice noodles or rice. This dish is highly regarded for its nutritional value, health benefits, and short cooking time, becoming a “quintessential Vietnamese dish” in the eyes of international tourists.
Ranked 53rd is “lẩu cá nấu cùng bông điên điển” (hotpot cooked with madar flower). While its exact rating hasn’t been disclosed (ratings are not disclosed for dishes below the top 35), the dish receives praise from many diners for its aroma and deliciousness. It’s a famous delicacy from Đồng Tháp Province during the flood season, made with local freshwater fish like linh fish and madar flowers.
